On the follow up to their debut album, “Good Luck”, the Spanish outfit LIZZIES had further improved on an already tested formula: “Good Luck” had reached #16 in the Spanish music charts, after its release in 2016. The band’s sophomore effort, the anticipated “On Thin Ice”, finds the quartet centered on well executed guitar hooks and, equally important, on sing-along choruses throughout all of the eleven tracks on the album. The brainchild of guitarist Patricia and bassist Marina, LIZZIES formed in Madrid in 2010, enlisting the charming vocalist Elena, and, at that time, the drummer Lucia, as an all female band. Lucia was replaced shortly after the release of their debut EP, “End Of Time”, by another female drummer, Saray, completing the formation that recorded “Good Luck”. In 2017 the band co-opted Dani (Vera) to fill the drummer position, the quartet becoming ¾ female. Earlier this year, the current lineup recorded “On Thin Ice”. The new album was produced by Ola Ersfjord (Tribulation, Primordial, Night, Honeymoon Disease) and mastered by Magnus Lindberg (Cult of Luna), and it is set for release on October 5th via The Sign Records.

The music on “On Thin Ice” is a clean hard rock mix of mid to late 70s and radio friendly 80s traditional heavy metal with a slight punk-rock attitude, which begs to be heard in a live setting. More so, as a summer evening, impromptu backyard gig, the kind of stuff that put Van Halen on the map in California in the mid to late 70s. Overall a great to follow album, with it’s eleven tracks that should and will engage the listener to singalong the choruses, tap feet, jump up and down, play air instruments and headbang to the persuasive cadence. The witty fresh and straight to the point lyrics focusing on social issues and, human relationships and interactions. Songs like “No Law City“, “Talk Shit And Get Hit“, “Rosa Maria”, “Love Is Hard” and “The Crown” stood out for me, but as I mentioned previously, “On Thin Ice” is highly enjoyable as a whole.

LIZZIES are currently touring the European circuit with their label mates, Hypnos, in support of the new release. A damn good album! Highly recommended to all fans of traditional heavy metal and 80s hard rock. 8.5/10 Emil/UHF
