The Riffs Must Flow – III

3 min read

Número 3. Riff keep coming our way and I’m still amazed as how much music there is and how little I know about the scene. A journey of discovery! Go figure, I was one of those lost metalheads thinking what the hell would I listen once the big bands began to call it quits, or die. Well, I’m a born again metalhead! The underground is thriving!

Are you guys fans of The Blues? Ok, don’t worry. This is not a blues album, but the influence is there for all to hear. Not only that but in the song Southern Superstition, the singer sounds like Cream’s Jack Bruce. Can you hear it? Or is it my mind playing tricks at 00:25am? I hear it. It’s a good thing.
This is a lively stoner rock album. The blues and southern flavor are strong in this one. And it leans on the heavy side of the spectrum, as we like and expect our music to be.

We all know Alice’s story in Wonderland. She’s been there many times and had many adventures as depicted by L. Carrol. But, he never told the story of Alice’s rocking power trio. They are named Ghost: Hello 🙂 On Drums, The Caterpillar, The Mad Hatter on guitar, synths & vocals, and Alice on Bass & Vocals. They play fuzz charged hard rock as you would guess. What else! They go from heavy riffs and screams to trippy synth grooves. Check them out.

Band: Ian Blurton
Title: Signals Through The Flame
Label: Independent
Release date: 07 June 2019
Country: Canada
Format reviewed: Digital Promo

Being honest, I don’t know who Blurton is, but I’m reading online he’s Canadian or lives there (maybe he’s friend with Heavy Metal Yeti?) and got an impressive career as musician and producer. Well, not going to lie, I don’t care to write about his CV, only about my thoughts (just a few) about his latest and first solo album. The album is a mix of old school hard rock and heavy metal. I’m sure there are many influences and names to be picked throughout the songs, I can clearly hear Thin Lizzy’s signature guitar work in the song Days Will Remain, but for the rest, I can’t pinpoint a certain band. But the influence of classic metal, NWOBHM dual guitar assault, and hard rock are right there. Well delivered, catchy melodies and well established metal hooks that will ring a bell with any classic metal fan. And I guess even non-metal listeners can enjoy.

Title: Doombanonicon
Label: Black Doomba Records
Release date: 17 May 2019
Country: Various
Format reviewed: Digital Promo

13 songs 13 bands 13 different takes on the Sabbath worship style of Doom. Mostly it feels and sounds like a Sabbath tribute album with by bands that have no problem wearing their influences on the sleeve. And I cannot find a single reason on why that is not a good thing! 😁 Oh, and for Fans of other Sabbath lineups, you can relate too. Some epic and keyboards that can take you back to Mob Rules or even some Martin era albums. Not as in your face as the 70’s Sabs, but it’s there.
Note: Some songs (bands) may distance themselves more than others on their approach. But they all hail Saint Anthony Lord Of The Riffs.

Press play and enjoy.
