Event Horizon July 2020

3 min read

Half the year gone, and I guess, unless my math is completely screwed, there’s another half to go!! It’s probably safe to say that the first half of 2020 was a stellar ride on the Metal merry-go-round. Not quite the heights of 2019, but certainly satisfying, nonetheless. So as we enter the month of July, it must be stated that things kick of rather quietly and certainly the volume of releases is somewhat reduced early on. From the look of my calendar, July 24 stands out at the most prolific release date. For this month’s Event Horizon I’ve gone with a similar theme; restricting the focus to just six selected titles. Hope you find something that pleases your Metal palette. Until next month, Ride on!

DECREPID – Endless Sea of Graves
Released: 07 July 2020
Style: Death Metal
Label: Xtreem Music
Link: Bandcamp

3rd album by this British band that plays a traditional style of old school Death Metal with raw sound where brutality and morbid mid tempos are combined in a natural way with influences in the vein of MORBID ANGEL, ASPHYX, MASSACRE, PURTENANCE, DEICIDE… (From Bio)

LANTERN – Dimensions
Released: 10 July 2020
Style: Black/Death Metal
Label: Dark Descent Records
Link: Bandcamp

The third album and follow-up to 2017’s “II: Morphosis” sees Lantern continuing on their unique path blending eerie melodies with and top notch riffs topped off by the one-of-a-kind vocals of Necrophilos. “Dimensions” is destined to be one of 2020’s finest efforts. Artwork by Timo Kokko. Mixed and mastered by Dan Lowndes at Resonance Sound Studio. (From Bio)

SKELETON – Skeleton
Released: 10 July 2020
Style:  Black/Thrash/Punk/Metal
Label: 20 Buck Spin
Link: Listen

Ripping forth like a dagger from the flesh of Austin, Texas comes the self-titled debut LP from the lone star state’s new wreckers of civilization, SKELETON. Having plied their black-market trade for several years in grime infested underground dungeons and sub-basements, 20 Buck Spin was called forth to issue SKELETON’s first LP, a cataclysmic expansion of the band’s unhallowed vision venturing well beyond its earlier borders.

Probably the most savage and intelligent dark punk/metal hybrid in years, the eleven tracks comprising Skeleton signal the black dawn of a new breed, and when the final somber strains of “Catacombs” close out the album, an eerie sense of the end as the beginning lingers like a morbid premonition. DEFEATED SANITY – The Sanguinary Impetus
Released: 24 July 2020
Style: Progressive/Brutal Death Metal
Label: Willowtip
Link: Bandcamp

The Sanguinary Impetus is perhaps the ultimate expression of DEFEATED SANITY‘s signature blend of the brutal with the technical, performed in a manner largely unparalleled in the world of extreme metal. At once comfortably recognizable and awe-inspiring, the forthcoming album is sure to be a lock for many year-end lists. Sickening riff crunch, hammering beats, and technical wizardry combine to create a level of sonic violence that won’t soon be forgotten.

The band released the following statement concerning the forthcoming album:

“With The Sanguinary Impetus we have created our most complex album to date. We had strayed pretty far from our style musically with Disposal of the Dead/Dharmata and felt a strong urge to pick up where we left off with Passages Into Deformity and expand on the trademark DS sound.” (From bio)

VOLTURYON – Xenogenesis
Released: 24 July 2020
Style: Death Metal
Label: ViciSolum Records
Link: Site

Volturyon´s new album “Xenogenesis” continues where the previous 2016 album “Cleansed by Carnage” left off. The goal has been to take the elements we enjoyed the most from ”Cleansed by Carnage” and improve them while at the same time working on developing the groove. Lyrically, the band have gone for a more aggressive route, inspired by the state of the world, but also happenings closer to home. (From Bio)
