Dodskold is a “mysterious” Swedish Black Metal band, because there’s no information about them. We only know the ‘names’ of the members for a letter, being L the guitar player; T the vocalist; and M the one at charge of bass, keyboards and clean vocals. And as they state on their Bandcamp site, “all three have been part of the Scandinavian Black Metal scene for years and Dodskold is their epitome of vision: Cold and grim Black Metal with lyrics in Swedish”. Very promising indeed.

I’d like to highlight one thing: this is not an album about a lot of musical variations nor prominent guitar leads. Instead, it’s the kind of music that is played forming a sonic ensemble in which every instrument intertwines with all the others, and the result is purely round, perfect, with no weak points. Also to mention that the raspy vocals gives complete sense to the bleak feel present in every song.

In this album you’ll find guitars repeating the same characteristic and melodic structures again and again, like an hypnotic mantra, creating a heavy, dark, ominous atmosphere; this, along with mid-paced drums that mark the path to a devastated mood once the album is over. But it’s in a good sense, ’cause after your senses have been annihilated you need to fill that emptiness again by listening to the whole album AGAIN.

I’m particularly allured by “Ty döden är lifvets lön”; it starts with a desolated guitar passage, then the first spoken words freezing the listeners’ hearts and leading them into a sea of flowing darkness, all way through driven by tremolo and rough vocals, and then towards the end a brief guitar solo explodes, just before the song fades away… simply fantastic.

I’d dare to say that Dodskold is very representative of the cold, desolated, and raw (but clean produced) Scandinavian Black Metal sound that so many of us love. And this is only the beginning! 9/10 Sílvia
