Born at the foot of the Pyrenean wall, deformed black metal duo Ergholae Somptator deliver haunting screams and a murky atmosphere emerging from the depths. Following their 2016 EP Morendo jusqu’à la fin, released through Depressive Illusion Records, and 2020 release Eau ardente via Marwolaeth Records, Ergholae Somptator descend further into the darkness with their second album Mille vertiges fondent sur les âmes vides.

Raw, aggressive and avant-garde Mille vertiges fondent sur les âmes vides (French for A thousand vertigoes descend on empty souls) is a spontaneous exploration of soundscapes. The heavily overdriven and distorted guitars and bass drive the power and momentum of the album forward. Ergholae Somptator has cultivated their sound enhancing the ghastly essence that runs through the album. The duo has made the artistic decision to write lyrics exclusively in French to maintain the true meaning of their compositions and avoid losing any aspects in translation. Opening with “La mort bientôt jouit”, a terrible sense of foreboding ensues with high-speed instrumentation and banshee like shrieks. “Les infectes salives” brings a contrasting demonic mood while the highly progressive, dissonant “La difformité des étoiles sombres” ventures further into experimental realms.

Ergholae Somptator emerge from the tortuous gloom to bring offerings of a formidable darkness. The unceasing energy dynamical rises and falls throughout the album while shrouding each track in their grim atmosphere. Mille vertiges fondent sur les âmes vides is an epic journey through the unknown, one only hopes to make it to the other side.
