It´s been a while since I’ve done one of those. But since it´s like riding a bike, I have no doubt I will be able to present this review of the upcoming album “Kronieken uit de nevel” by the Dutch Schavot. Signed with Void Wanderer Productions and War Productions, this album is scheduled for a release next Friday, and may I say; you should all be very excited about it.

The opener track “Onmens” right away leaves the overall impression that this album is quite well made. Although a little bit on the lo-fi side than I would personally prefer it still does suit the music well which is filled with interesting riffs and the feeling of…flowing along the melodies. “Geestenrijk” follows it up as another fast banger, but with more of a basic and straight forward guitar riffs. A little bit of a reminder of Rotting Christ is nothing to complain about.

The drums take advantage of the nice mid pace tempo in “Heksenwaan” in a good way by speeding things up and taking them back down where its needed; the utter evil along the almost beauty in one and the same track manages to still leave out any weirdness something like that might bring. Later on, however “Hijs de Zeilen” takes on a bit of an older Finntroll inspiration.

Niet Alleen de Avond valt” goes back to the more beautiful side of this album; laid back parts along with interesting vocals which go from traditional to shouting to spoken segments, and finally “De Laatste dans gedanst” similarly starts almost as a ballad, and yet soon enough hits the throttle significantly. Between all the blast beats there are great parts in which the track sort of merges everything back together before going all out once more.

As a one man project this definitely was a surprise. Often enough when there is only one pair of ears at work in all tracks the work becomes single minded and limited, however, the level of quality going on in each and every track, it´s writing and performances is almost flawless. The fans of the mid 90s Scandinavian black-metal won’t be disappointed. 9/10 Julia Katrin
