METAL GENTLEMAN’S MAY’S IN ROTATION LIST

May has been filled with amazing releases but sadly I didn’t get the chance to explore all the ones that I intended, but I got to check out some that I overlooked from the past months and I’m really glad they didn’t get lost in the continuous stream of new records.

LIGFAERD – “Den Ildrøde Konge” (2019)

This was a recommendation from my good colleague, the K-MaN himself. I remembered I listened to LIGFAERD the day he told me about them, but for some reason I kind of forgot about it. However, in one of my Bandcamp shopping sprees I decided to buy some albums based only on cover and I liked the gothic look of “Den Ildrøde Konge” so I added it to my collection. Boy, am I happy I did that. There isn’t anything progressive about this, but it’s some highly enjoyable black metal, without any frills.

EMPLOYED TO SERVE – “Eternal Forward Motion” (2019)

Between all the blast beats and tremolo riffs I usually envelop myself with, I tend to enjoy myself some punchy, mosh pit inducing music. EMPLOYED TO SERVE have composed an album to move mountains to. If the title track won’t make you want to smash boulders with your own bare hands, then I don’t know what will.

ADVENT SORROW – “Kali Yuga Crown” (2019)
DSBM is a mixed bag genre for me. Highly emotive music should normally be just right up my alley, but when it comes to typical DSBM I just can’t enjoy it. I’m thankful that ADVENT SORROW aren’t exactly typical. Out of the bands of this sub-genre that I can enjoy, they are by far my favourite. I can’t quite put my finger on what makes them so different, but if you want to torture yourself with some quality depressive music, Advent Sorrow won’t disappoint you for sure.

WAYFARER – “World’s Blood” (2018)
I have no idea why I slept on this album for so long and I’m genuinely angry at myself that I did. They describe themselves as “black metal for the American West”. If you expect some country music infused black metal, you aren’t getting any of that. It’s rather an excruciating journey in solitude through snow covered mountain peaks enveloped by bitter winds. Absolutely stunning.

MYLINGAR – “Döda Drömmar by Mylingar” (2018)
I like bands that set out to do only one thing: to annihilate all speakers. MYLINGAR saw all the extreme sub-genres and then was asked by the Metal Gods: ”You can choose one. What do you want to be?” and MYLINGAR, with a huge grin on its face answered: “Heavy”. It’s just a steamroller going with a hundred miles an hour. There’s no point in trying to explain it further.
